BALTIMORE, Md. - The George Washington men's soccer team was edged by UMBC, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Retriever Soccer Park.
The Colonials (2-2-3) battled throughout the match, but were edged with less than 10 seconds remaining in the first overtime period as the Retrievers (2-1-3) sunk the golden goal. The match marked GW's fourth overtime battle in seven games this season.
GW took the first shot of the match when an attempt by junior Christian Lawal went wide in the 10th minute.
Lawal hit his mark to put the Colonials ahead, 1-0, in the 39th minute with his first goal of the season when redshirt senior Oliver De Thier sent a pass into the box from distance. Lawal received the ball just inside the top of the box on the run and shot around UMBC's keeper from about nine yards out to sink a shot into the back of the net.
Sophomore keeper Thor Arne Höfs made a nice save in the 40th minute, diving to his left to preserve GW's 1-0 lead at the intermission.
Senior Garrett Heine had a chance early in the second half, lacing a shot on target, but a leaping UMBC keeper was able to tip the ball over the crossbar for the save in the 49th minute.
Höfs made two quick saves in the 64th minute as UMBC's Tre Pilliam's shot ricocheted off of Höfs before he aimed a followup shot off the rebound, but Höfs smothered the second attempt to end the threat.
Sophomore Dylan Lightbourn nearly increased GW's lead in the 70th minute after receiving a pass at the top of the box and drawing out UMBC's keeper, but his shot went just wide.
Höfs tallied yet another stellar save in the 75th minute when UMBC's Christian Morales fired a shot from about eight yards out, but Höfs blocked the attempt for his fifth save of the match.
A header shot by the Retrievers off of a set piece in the 79th minute resulted in another Höfs save.
UMBC issued the equalizer in the 81st minute from a header to even the score at 1-1 and send the match into overtime.
The Retrievers netted the golden goal with nine seconds remaining in the first overtime period when a set piece from outside the the right side of the box was headed then one-touched into the back of the net to lift UMBC over GW, 2-1.
Höfs finished with six saves on the day. Lawal and Heine matched a game-high with three shots in the match.
The Colonials continue a stretch of four consecutive road matches on Tuesday when GW visits Robert Morris for a 6 p.m. contest.
