FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The George Washington men's soccer squad wrapped exhibition play with a 2-0 victory at Mary Washington on Sunday evening.
Both squads played tough from the start, resulting in a scoreless first half. The Colonials came close to a lead in the first stanza when junior Oliver Curry hit the crossbar on a free kick.
GW took the lead within minutes of the start of the second half when Curry found his mark after senior Sam Summerlin fed Curry the ball from the left. Curry then skillfully shot around the goalkeeper to find the back of the net from 20 yards out.
The Colonials later added to their lead when senior Garrett Heine drew a foul to earn a free kick from 30 yards out. Heine smashed the ball into the top corner of the net to give GW a 2-0 victory.
GW's squad took advantage of exhibition play to grow experience across the roster. Freshman Will Desautels and sophomores Thor Arne Höfs and Jason Re - the Colonials' three keepers - all saw minutes in goal on Sunday.
The Buff and Blue open the regular season on Friday, Aug. 26, at William and Mary.
