
No. 13 GW Women's Squash Downs Virginia, 7-2

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 13 George Washington women's squash team bounced back from an opening-day loss to cruise past No. 16 Virginia, 7-2, in the Kurtz Cup (B-Division) Consolation Semifinals on Saturday evening at the College Squash Association National Championships at Brady Squash Center.
GW (9-8) advances to play Franklin & Marshall in the consolation final on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
The Colonials raced out to a 3-0 lead after the first round of matches with sophomores Abby Shonrock (11-1, 11-4, 11-7 at No. 3) and Mary Jo Mahfood (11-5, 11-4, 11-6 at No. 6) prevailing in three games. Freshman Ginger Sands added an 11-6, 12-10, 9-11, 11-5 win over Candace Craig at No. 9.
The lead was extended to 4-0 when junior Breanne Flynn swept her way to an 11-7, 11-6, 11-8 win over Diane Tyson at No. 2. Senior Emely Levyn followed suit with a sweep of Bella Jones, 11-6, 11-7, 11-4 at No 5 to clinch the match at 5-0.
Also earning wins for the Colonials on Saturday were senior Anna Gabriela Porras, who earned her 54th career victory with an 11-4, 11-2, 12-10 sweep of Carey Danforh at No. 1, and junior Mehak Chawla also by way of a sweep, rolling past Amanda Whelan at No. 7, 11-5, 11-1, 11-3.
