WASHINGTON - The No. 13 George Washington women's squash team opened its 2016-17 campaign in convincing fashion with a 9-0 win over Georgetown on Friday night at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts at Lerner Health and Wellness Center.
The Colonials won all nine matches in three games, with a trio of freshman earning victories in their collegiate debuts.
Engy El Mandouh debuted in the No. 2 position on the ladder and blanked her opponent in the middle game of an 11-4, 11-0, 11-4 win over Alessandra Ruggiero.
Elle Carroll played at No. 6 and earned an 11-2, 11-2, 11-3 win over over Jane Hopkins while fellow freshman Samira Baird won at No. 7 by scores of 11-1, 11-1, 11-4.
Senior Breanne Flynn led the Colonials from the No. 1 position with an 11-5, 11-3, 11-1 triumph over Brooke Miller.
Also earning wins for GW were junior Mary Jo Mahfood (11-5, 11-2, 11-2 at No. 3), junior Abby Shonrock (11-5, 11-2, 11-2 at No. 4), senior Mehak Chawla (11-2, 11-1, 11-1 at No. 5), sophomore Brooke Feldman (11-3, 11-1, 11-0 at No. 8) and junior Ginger Sands (11-1, 11-0, 11-2 at No. 9).
GW is back in action on Sunday morning when it hosts Johns Hopkins at the Grossman Squash Courts at 11:30 a.m.
