ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The George Washington men' soccer squad was edged, 1-0, at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday afternoon at the Marra Athletic Complex.
The Colonials (7-4-5, 2-2-2 A-10) issued the first shot of the match when junior Oliver Curry's attempt was knocked away by the Bonnies' keeper in the seventh minute, resulting in a corner kick.
GW kept control of the ball, earning another corner kick in the 11th minute, but was unable to make an attempt at the net.
Junior Christian Lawal then put a shot on goal in the 15th minute, but another save prevented the score. Curry then sent a header shot just wide of his mark off of a corner kick from senior Garrett Heine in the 17th minute.
Sophomore Thor Arne Höfs made his first save of the day in the 23rd minute, stopping a header attempt.
Heine followed with a shot in the 27th minute, but a defensive block kept the match scoreless.
Another GW corner kick and a wide shot by sophomore Alastair Berry in the 32nd minute rounded out GW's first-half chances as the match remained scoreless at the end of the stanza.
St. Bonaventure took the lead in the first minute of the second half when the Bonnies took the ball deep into the box and scored across the goal into the bottom right corner of the net to pull ahead, 1-0.
A Bonnies handball in the box led to a penalty kick for the Colonials in the 59th minute, but Heine's shot was stopped by a diving save to prevent the equalizer.
Höfs kept GW close with a stellar save in the 65th minute, leaping to get a hand on a strong shot by the Bonnies and tip the ball away from the goal.
The Colonials had another opportunity in the 84th minute when Lawal sent a free kick toward the net, but another save squashed the threat.
Sophomore Dylan Lightbourn sent a strong cross into the box in the 87th minute, but the Bonnies' defense cleared it away before another Colonial could get a shot off resulting in a GW corner kick.
Another corner kick by the Colonials in the 89th minute was cleared away as St. Bonaventure took the match, 1-0.
GW held a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks on the day, but a quick second-half goal by the Bonnies proved to be the difference maker.
Heine led all players with five shots in the match - two on goal.
The Colonials now have a hiatus from competition and will look to bounce back on Saturday, Oct. 29, when GW visits Massachusetts. Only two matches remain in the regular season.
