PHILADELPHIA - George Washington women's squash freshmen Engy El Mandouh and Samira Baird competed in the United States Squash Intercollegiate Doubles Championship this past weekend at Drexel University, finishing in second place overall in the women's draw.
The men's squash program was also represented by junior John Bassett and freshman Jamie Oakley.
It marked the first time in program history that George Washington has been represented at Intercollegiate Doubles. This year is the sixth time that US Squash has hosted an intercollegiate women's draw, while the men's draw has been contested since 1988.
El Mandouh and Baird wet 2-1 in the tournament, opening with a 3-0 loss (15-12, 15-11, 15-9) to the eventual championship pair of Maria Ubina and Alexandra Toth of Princeton.
The Colonial duo won each of their final two matches, starting with a forfeit win over Dulakshi Elikewela and Lauren Johnston (Franklin & Marshall).
In the second-place match, El Mandouh and Baird played to a 3-1 win (15-9, 10-15, 15-13, 15-4) over Domencia Romo and Hedvika Suchankova of Dickinson College.
On the men's side, Bassett and Oakley fell in the round of 16 - 15-10, 15-10, 15-10 - to Senen Ubina and James O'Kjorlien (Navy) before bowing out in straight sets in the consolation semifinals, 3-0, to Aaron Horwitz and Wallace Miller (Haverford).
The men's team will open the 2016-17 season on Wednesday, November 9, against Georgetown at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts at Lerner Health & Wellness Center. The women's team will open two days later against the Hoyas at home.
