WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's soccer team outshot visiting Drexel, 8-3, but could not find the back of the net as the Dragons took a 1-0 victory on Friday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (2-2-0) played a strong defensive game in the first half, allowing the Dragons (4-1-0) just two fruitless shots in the first 45 minutes. The Buff and Blue got off three shots on target, but Drexel's goalkeeper Eve Badana thwarted each attempt.
In the second half, redshirt-senior Nicole Belfonti quickly took a strong shot in the 48th minute that hit the post. Drexel then broke the tie in the 51st minute as Jacki Sieder fed the ball to Vanessa Kara on the right side of the box. Kara then dribbled to the left side of the goal and netted the would-be game winner.
The Colonials took four more shots in the second stanza, with a laser from junior MacKenzie Cowley hitting the crossbar in the 58th minute. Shots by freshmen Charley Prevost and Sofia Pavon were each grabbed by Badana, as the Drexel keeper tallied five saves on the day. GW keeper Miranda Horn made one stop in the first half.
GW returns to the pitch on Thursday, Sept, 10, to take on crosstown rival Georgetown for a 4 p.m. matchup.
