WASHINGTON - Junior MacKenzie Cowley notched her second multi-goal game of the season on Sunday as the George Washington women's soccer team defeated Delaware State, 2-0, to wrap a perfect two-game homestand.
The Colonials (4-4-0) dominated possession throughout the game, not allowing a shot by Delaware State (2-7-1) until the second half. The victory marked GW's fourth shutout of the season and second consecutive triumph.
Cowley tallied the eventual gamewinner in the 11th minute off of a pass from freshman Mia Barreda at the top of the box. Cowley then quickly dribbled deeper into the box before burying the ball into the top right portion of the net to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead that would stick through the remainder of the half.
In the 69th minute, Cowley added insurance with her second score of the game, and sixth of the season, this time on a give-and-go play with sophomore Ingrid DiClemente deep in the box. Cowley's quick touch kept the ball on the ground and passed the Hornets' keeper to give GW a 2-0 lead that would stick for the rest of the game.
The Buff and Blue put pressure on Delaware State early and often, outshooting the visiting Hornets, 11-5, in the contest. Six of the Colonials' nine corker kicks came in the first half, while DSU did not take a single corner kick on the day.
Three of the Hornet's five shots came in the final seven minutes of the match, but senior Ellen Conway set aside each attempt. Redshirt-sophomore Miranda Horn also posted a pair of saves on the day in her 73 minutes of play.
The Colonials return to the pitch on Thursday as they visit UMBC for a 7 p.m. matchup.
