LORETTO, Pa. -- The George Washington men's soccer team concluded its season-opening five-game road swing with a 2-0 loss at Saint Francis on Wednesday afternoon at the Stokes SoccerPlex.
Ranked eighth in the Northeast region, the Red Flash (3-1-2) scored a pair of early goals to win their third straight game.
GW (1-4-0) took two shots on goal in the opening minutes, with both sophomore Christian Lawal and junior Angel Valencia forcing Saint Francis keeper Andrew Garcia into saves.
The Red Flash opened the scoring in the ninth minute, as Mario Mastrangelo took a Pablo Medina pass and beat GW freshman goalkeeper Thor Arne Höfs to the lower-left from 18 yards out.
Ten minutes later, Conner Rezende deked out a couple GW defenders and bent a shot past Höfs and under the crossbar for SFU's second goal of the first half. Medina was credited with an assist on the marker.
Neither team threatened much the rest of the half, and Saint Francis led, 2-0, at halftime.
The Red Flash came close out of the break, as a Francis de Vries header off a corner kick was cleared off the line by a pair of GW defenders. The Colonials created a few chances in the second half but were unable to find the back of the net.
Höfs recorded six saves in the game, while Garcia stopped four shots for the Red Flash.
The Colonials return to action on Saturday, when they host Loyola (Md.) in their home opener at 1 p.m. with a free cookout for all fans beginning at 12:30 p.m. as part of the annual Kickin' It at the Vern.
