FAIRFAX, Va. -- Junior Garrett Heine gave the George Washington men's soccer team a 1-0 lead midway through the first half, but American responded with a pair of unanswered goals as the Eagles defeated the Colonials, 2-1, in the season opener for both teams at the Kuykenstrong D.C. College Cup at George Mason Stadium.
Heine put the Colonials on the board first, scoring on a penalty kick in the 27th minute. The junior slid his shot into the bottom right corner past a diving American keeper.
The Eagles tied it up less than four minutes later when Dale Ludwig sent a long pass through the middle which Kibu Mbaluku finished at the 32:00 mark.
The match remained knotted at 1-1 through halftime, but American broke the deadlock in the 71st minute when Ludwig sent a cross to Joe Iraola, who slid his shot into the net from close range.
Making the start in his collegiate debut, freshman goalie Thor Arne Höfs finished with seven saves, while AU's Dylan Hobert stopped one shot.
The Colonials return to action on Sunday when they take on District rival Howard. Kickoff on the second day of the Kuykenstrong D.C. College cup is slated for 5pm at George Mason Stadium.
