WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's squash team has been honored with the Clarence C. Chaffee Award by the College Squash Association (CSA), the conference office announced on Thursday.
The award, presented annually since 1987, is named in memory of former Williams coach Clarence Chaffee. It is bestowed upon the program that best demonstrates the qualities of sportsmanship, teamwork, character and improvement.
The Colonials finished the 2014-15 campaign ranked No. 7 nationally, the highest end-of-season ranking in program history, after appearing in the Howe Cup (A-Division) of the CSA National Championship for the first time ever.
GW picked up key victories during the season, including upsets of then-No. 7 Stanford (Jan. 5) and then-No. 9 Columbia (Jan. 25), which vaulted the squad into the top tier of collegiate squash.
A massive blizzard in Boston cut the CSA National Championships short as a number of teams, including GW, elected to safely escape New England ahead of the storm. Despite the weather issues, the Colonials still finished the season at No. 7 in the final national rankings.
The Colonials previously won the Chaffee Award at the conclusion of the 2007-08 season.
