WASHINGTON -- Junior Garrett Heine netted his team-best seventh goal of the season early in the second half, but the George Washington men's soccer team fell to Atlantic 10 rival St. Bonaventure, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
St. Bonaventure (2-13-1, 1-4-0 A-10) jumped in front quickly. After Breno Calegari played the ball into the box, Kieran Toland headed it toward the net. GW freshman goalkeeper Thor Arne Höfs deflected the initial shot, but the ball caromed to Kosi Nwafornso, who chipped it over Höfs' head in the 11th minute.
The Bonnies took their 1-0 lead into the break, but GW (7-7-0, 3-2-0 A-10) answered less than three minutes into the second stanza when Heine got around his defender and sent a slow roller from the right side that snuck inside the far post for the equalizer and his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Sophomores Christian Lawal and Koby Osei-Wusu were each credited with assists on the goal.
Nwafornso's second goal of the game proved to be the game-winner in the 61st minute. As he approached the 18-yard box, Höfs came out of the net to make a play, but Nwafornso got by him and scored on an empty net for the 2-1 victory.
The Colonials had a couple good opportunities in the final 25 minutes, but none found the back of the net. Lawal sent a pass into the center of the box for Heine, who headed the ball toward the net, but St. Bonaventure keeper Luke Iacobellis was there to make the stop in the 65th minute. Then with less than five minutes remaining, freshman Dylan Lightbourn collected a corner kick and fired toward goal, but Iacobellis made a diving save.
GW outshot St. Bonaventure, 12-5, in the game and held a 13-1 advantage on corner kicks. Höfs finished with one save on the day while Iacobellis stopped three shots.
The Colonials return to action on Saturday, when they visit VCU for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
