8/29/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
After a scoreless first half, American broke a scoreless tie in the 74th minute as a pass from Liam Robley found Joe Iraola in the box, and Iraola fired from eight yards out to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Robley himself struck 10 minutes later off a set piece, bending his shot into the top-right corner of the net from 25 yards out.
The Eagles outshot the Colonials, 10-5, but GW held a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Jean-Pierre van der Merwe made one save for the Colonials, while AU's Dylan Hobert stopped two shots. Sophomores Tobi Adewole and Garrett Heine each took two shots for GW.
The Colonials return to action on Sunday when they take on District rival Howard at 12 p.m. at Reeves Field for the second day of the Kuykenstrong D.C. College Cup.
