GW Women's Squash Upsets Brown in Kurtz Cup Semis

PRINCETON, N.J. - The No. 11 George Washington women's squash team upset No. 10 Brown on Saturday afternoon at the Jadwin Squash Courts to advance to the Kurtz Cup (B-Division) Championship at the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Nationals.
With the win, GW (13-5) assures itself a program-best top-10 ranking and advances to play No. 9 Columbia in the Kurtz Cup Championship on Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m.
The Colonials used wins from sophomore Anna Gabriela Porras, freshman Breanne Flynn, sophomore Alejandra Porras and seniors Jackie Shea and Kelly Barnes to knock off Brown and avenge an early-season loss to their Ivy League rivals.
GW won two of three matches in the first flight courtesy of a pair of five-set thrillers. Alejandra Porras erased a 2-1 deficit and dominated the final two frames en route to a 7-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-8, 11-1 win over Hannah Hay-Smith at No. 3.
Senior Kelly Barnes followed moments later with a similar victory, rallying from a 2-1 hole to earn a 10-12, 11-8, 10-12, 11-5, 11-9 victory over Meredith Feller at No. 6, giving the Colonials a 2-1 advantage in the match.
After Brown pulled even with a win at No. 8, Flynn continued her impressive freshman campaign by easily downing Sarah Domenick at No. 2, 11-3, 11-3, 11-7 to put the Colonials back on top 3-2.
Brown answered once again and pulled even at 3-3 with a win at No. 5 before Anna Gabriela Porras earned a 3-0 sweep at No. 1 by beating Dori Rahbar 11-5, 11-3, 11-6, putting the Colonials up 4-3 and a win away from the finals.
Needing one win in the final two matches, it was senior Jackie Shea providing the clinching victory, disposing of Emily Richmond at No. 4, 10-12, 11-4, 11-9, 11-5.
Sunday will mark GW's first-ever appearance in the B-Division championship match. Regardless of Sunday's result, the Colonials will finish in the top-10 with the highest end-of-season national ranking in program history.
