Box Score WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's soccer team fell to Atlantic 10 rival VCU, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
VCU (7-7-4, 4-0-3 A-10) scored a goal in each half while remaining unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play.
Devon Fischer put the Rams on the board early, as his shot from the far side found the lower right corner of the net in the seventh minute. Jose Manel and Mario Herrera Meraz were each credited with assists on the goal.
GW (6-9-1, 2-4-1 A-10) had a couple opportunities to tie the game in the middle of the first half. Off a corner kick, junior Philip McQuitty got his head on the ball, but his shot was blocked by a VCU defender in the 24th minute. Just over a minute later, senior Andri Alexandersson's free kick went just wide of the net.
VCU took its 1-0 lead into halftime, then tallied an insurance marker in the 63rd minute when Fischer sent a cross to the center of the box for Herrera Meraz, who fired it into the top right for a 2-0 lead.
Junior goalkeeper Jean-Pierre van der Merwe recorded five saves in the game, while VCU's Garrett Cyprus stopped two shots. The Rams outshot the Colonials, 15-6, for the match, and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Colonials return to action next Sunday when they host Atlantic 10 rival Davidson on Senior Day, with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
