WASHINGTON - Senior Seth Rudolph scored in the ninth minute, but visiting UMBC responded with two goals in a five-minute span and held on to defeat the George Washington men's soccer team, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Retrievers (4-2-2) put on the pressure early, taking four shots in the first eight minutes, including a free kick by midfielder Milo Kapor that hit the cross bar just 1:42 into the match.
The Colonials (3-4-0) made their first shot of the game count, as Rudolph redirected a cross from senior Zach Abaie from seven yards out to give GW a 1-0 lead at the 8:29 mark with his third goal of the season and the 25th of his career.
UMBC tied the game less than six minutes later, when Kapor drilled a penalty kick into the back of the net at 14:25. Then in the 19th minute, UMBC was granted a free kick just outside the left edge of the box. Forward Pete Caringi touched the ball to Kapor, who blasted it on goal. GW redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jean-Pierre van der Merwe made the save, but UMBC midfielder Jordan Becker collected the rebound and buried it from five yards out for what proved to be the game-winner.
The Retrievers outshot the Colonials, 7-1, in the second half, but GW's one shot nearly tied the game, as sophomore Andri Alexandersson's header off a corner kick with just over six minutes remaining was bound for the top-right corner of the goal before UMBC goalie Phil Saunders made a leaping save.
Van der Merwe recorded a career-high 11 saves, as the Retrievers outshot the Colonials, 18-7, in the game. Saunders finished with five stops for UMBC.
The Colonials return to action on Wednesday, when they host NJIT at 3 p.m. at the GW Soccer Field.
