Omar Sobhy Leads GW Squash Players At Individual Nationals

HANOVER, NH- Sophomore Omar Sobhy led four George Washington squash players at the College Squash Association (CSA) Individual Nationals at Dartmouth College this past weekend. Sobhy won the Malloy Cup (B Division) Championship, defeating athletes from Columbia, Trinity, Yale, Harvard and the University of Rochester for the GW Squash program's first ever individual championship.
Sobhy, who entered the tournament as the 88th-ranked player in the CSA, was the No. 15 seed in the B-division draw of 56 players and rattled off five consecutive victories to take home the Malloy Cup Championship. All of Sobhy's opponents were players on a top-five team in collegiate squash. In the finals he faced Matt Domenick, winning in straight sets 12-10, 11-5, 11-9.
Sobhy's accomplishment marks the first time that a GW player has advanced past the second round of Nationals. His outstanding performance over the weekend will earn him a final ranking of No. 33 in the United States.
Also representing GW were freshmen Jackie Shea, Kelly Barnes and sophomore Islam El-Fiky.
Shea won her first match as the No. 15 seed in the Holleran Cup (B Divsion), defeating Sarah Crosky 11-9, 11-8, 12-10. She fell in her next match to No. 1 seed Kyla Sherwood but advanced to the semi-finals of the consolation bracket.
Barnes also was victorious in her first match, defeating Shaheen Madraswala of Mount Holyoke College, 11-9, 11-6, 11-7.
El-Fiky was the No. 19 seed in the A-Division but fell in his opening round match against Randy Lim of the national champion Trinity College team.
