WASHINGTON, DC - The No. 16 George Washington women's squash team returned to the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts for the first time since November 20th on Saturday afternoon, prevailing 7-2 over No. 16 Franklin & Marshall.
The win marked GW's third in a row after losing four straight matches at the beginning of January. A critical stretch of the season has arrived with just three matches remaining before the CSA Team Nationals in Princeton, NJ February 17-19.
Freshmen Jackie Shea and Kelly Barnes led the Colonials with two wins in at the top of the ladder. Shea fell behind two games to one in the top ladder spot before rattling of consecutive sets to take the game 6-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-3, 11-8 over Morgan Smith. Barnes cruised to a 13-11, 11-5, 11-3 decision over Chelsea Ross.
Two Colonials recorded straight set wins as freshman Elizabeth Tapley and junior Caroline Shumway notched wins in the fourth and sixth ladder spots, respectivly.
Junior Lauren Mathieu was able to win two games at the beginning of her match against Roxana Mead in the No. 3 position, but was unable to maintain momentum, falling 7-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-3, 12-10.
On the men's side, the No. 17 men's team fell to No. 8 Franklin & Marshall, 9-0. Sophomore Islam El-Fiky lost for just the second time this season, falling in a five set thriller to Gabriel De Melo 11-13, 9-11, 11-4, 12-10, 11-9.
Sophomore Omar Sobhy also fought to a fifth set before dropping a 3-2 decision to Guillherme De Melo (4-11, 11-6, 11-5, 9-11, 11-6).
Both teams will return to action February 12 when they travel to Clifton, NY. the men will take on Northeastern and Hamilton while the women will face off with Hamilton, Northeastern and Brown.
