Nationally Ranked GW Squash Teams Sweeps Georgetown

WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's and women's squash teams both opened their seasons Friday afternoon with 9-0 sweeps of district rival Georgetown at the at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts at the Lerner Health and Wellness Center.
The No. 14 ranked GW women's team ladder recorded five match-victories in straight sets highlighted by sophomores Jackie Shea and Kelly Barnes, post a triumph over Georgetown for the second straight year. Shea beat GU's Carolyn Meister 11-5, 11-6, 11-4 and Barnes closed out Craddock 11-5, 11-6, 11-3.
Freshman Adriana Calderon was dominant in her debut match at GW after transferring from Charlotte. Her sweep of GU's Mary McShea was highlighted by near-perfect 11-1 second-set win.
Senior Lauren Mathieu was challenged in the opening set before claiming a 12-10 win against GU's Cofrey. The Colonials veteran rolled to a 11-0 shutout in the second set and closed with a 11-5 win in the third.
The No. 17 ranked men's team also swept its way to a 9-0 victory over the Hoyas. Junior Islam El-Fiky cruised to a sweep of Nicholas Kourides in the No. 1 position on the ladder to lead the top four to perfect 3-0 victories. Seniors Jose Calderon and Adam Pistel and junior Sam Ehrlich went undefeated.
Freshman David Moxley stumbled in his debut set, but rebounded for a four-set win with scores of 9-11, 11-4, 11-1, 11-5. Junior Player Haynes dropped the second set to James Callelo but eventually pulled away for a 3-1 victory.
The men's squash team returns to action next weekend with a trio of games in Annapolis, Md., beginning with a Saturday, Nov. 12 doubleheader against Drexel and Northwestern. The Colonials then fact the Hobart Statesmen the following day.
The women's team will next face Drexel on Nov. 12 in Annapolis, Md.
