WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's squash team went into the weekend ranked 20th nationally and was looking to raise their national ranking in the Howe Cup for the second straight season. They accomplished their goal once again as they played St. Lawrence, the #5 seed in the Walker division on Friday and won by a final score of 7-2. On Saturday they then faced off against the #1 seed Wesleyan and won by the decisive score of 8-1.
In the finals they defeated Vassar College 5-4 in a thrilling match. Sophomore Lauren Mathieu defeated her opponent 3-0, but the other winners (Caroline Shumway, Eliza Ehrlich, Mallory Ward and Tiffany Hingley) all fought back from behind to win their matches. Shumway fought off match point 4 times, and Hingley was the last match on and won in five games after being down 9-4 in the 5th. In winning all three of their matches the Colonials take home the Walker Cup, which will be displayed in Foggy Bottom until the Howe Cup next season. Sophomore Lauren Mathieu, Shumway, Hingley and Junior Eliza Ehrlich all won all their matches this weekend.
Eliza Ehrlich also received a College Squash Association Scholar Athlete Award, and senior Mallory Ward was one of four nominees for the Anne Wetzel Award, an all college squash award given to a senior who began her squash career in college.
Head Coach Maura Myers was very proud of her team's performance after the weekend. "We are thrilled to have ended the season on such a high note," said Myers. "Kate Bullard and Lauren Mathieu will be attending individual nationals next weekend in Hartford. With such a talented sophomore class that is hitting their stride, and with a strong recruiting class coming in, the team is excited to try to bring even more awards back to Washington, DC."
