HAVERFORD, PA- The George Washington men's and women's squash teams both rolled to 9-0 victories in a doubleheader sweep of Haverford and Vassar on Saturday in Haverford, PA. The #16 women's team and the #20 men's team both move to 3-0 to start the season.
Freshmen Jackie Shea and Kelly Barnes once again occupied the top two spots in the ladder for the Colonials. Shea cruised in her first match against Haverford's Caroline Nightingale winning 11-4, 11-3, 11-4. Barnes also made quick work of her first opponent, beating Kira Jones 11-2, 11-1, 11-2 before dropping one set in her next match against Vassar's Libby Pei, prevailing 8-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-3.
Sophomore Lauren Mathieu dominated in her two matches, allowing just 10 points total while cruising to victories over Haverford's Jenny Tong (11-0, 11-2, 11-1) and Willow Thompson of Haverford (11-4, 11-3, 11-0).
On the men's side, freshman Islam El-Fiky was the Colonials #1 player against Haverford, defeating Andy McComas by scores of 11-5, 11-0, 11-3. Sophomore Omar Sobhy took over at the top of the ladder against Vassar and cruised to a 11-5, 11-2, 11-2 victory over Jacob Harris.
Freshman Chris Castelo made his GW debut against Vassar, defeating Yi Tan 11-3, 11-7, 11-4. The men's team only dropped one game on the afternoon, as senior Mike Bower defeated Chris Tyson of Haverford by scores of 9-11, 11-6, 11-3, 11-5.
The GW men's squash team returns to action on Friday when they take on Northwestern in Annapolis, MD at 6pm. The women will resume play on November 20th when they host Virginia and Columbia in a tri-match at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts at the Lerner Health and Wellness Center.
