Men's Squash Defeats Columbia

WASHINGTON, DC- The No. 19 ranked George Washington men's squash team improved to 7-0 to start the season after defeating No. 33 ranked Columbia 7-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts at the Lerner Health and Wellness Center.
Freshman Islam El-Fiky once again led the way for the Colonials in the top ladder spot. El-Fiky recorded a 11-2, 11-5, 12-10 victory over Graham Miah. Junior Jose Calderon dropped one game against Clayton Buchsbaum in the number three spot before prevailing 11-7, 9-11, 12-10, 11-7.
The bottom third of GW's ladder help cement the victory as sophomores Player Haynes, Sam Ehrlich and freshman Chris Bell all recorded impressive victories. Haynes' performance was exceptional as he defeated Tommy Brosens, allowing just two points in an 11-2, 11-0, 11-0 victory. Ehrlich notched a 11-2, 11-2, 11-7 victory over Zachary Ali while Bell dropped one game en route to a 11-4, 10-12, 11-4, 11-5 win.
The Colonials will take two weeks off before returning to action at the Wesleyan Round Robin, December 4-5 in Middletown, CT. GW will face Colby and Wesleyan on December 4, followed by tilts with Bowdoin and Trinity on December 5.
On the women's side, the #16 ranked GW women split a morning double header with Virginia and Columbia. In the first match, GW (4-1) easily defeated the No. 33 ranked Virginia Cavaliers (0-1) while not dropping a game. Freshmen Jackie Shea and Kelly Barnes both cruised to easy victories in the top two ladder spots. Shea posted an 11-4, 11-5, 11-3 victory over Kelly Whelan, while Barnes had little trouble defeating Lynn Sitachitt 11-3, 11-2, 11-5.
Sophomore Lauren Mathieu once again excelled in the number three position on the ladder, posting an 11-1, 11-2, 11-2 victory over Sara Lee Pruksaritanon.
The Colonials fell to No. 20 ranked Columbia (1-0) in the second contest by a score of 6-3. Shea and Barnes once again tallied straight set victories over their opponents. Also recording a victory for the Colonials was freshman Becca Imrich. Imrich recorded a marathon five-set victory over Lindsey Harris (11-2, 11-6, 10-12, 9-11, 11-5).
The Colonials return to action on December 4 at the Wesleyan Round Robin when they face Colby and Wesleyan.
