RICHMOND, VA - With only seven players available due to injuries, the George Washington women's basketball team surrendered 24 fast-break points and 23 points off turnovers to a much deeper and quicker Richmond squad in a 76-47 loss in Atlantic 10 action at Robins Center Tuesday night.
After dressing just eight players the previous six games, GW (3-13, 0-4 A-10) was reduced to seven players Tuesday as freshman Shi-Heria Shipp missed the game after suffering an ankle sprain against Charlotte Saturday.
Megan Nipe led GW and matched a career-high with 13 points and Tiana Myers added 12 on a combined 11-of-32 shooting, but the rest of the depleted Colonials managed just 22 points on 8-of-26 shooting.
Richmond's (14-4, 3-0 A-10) pressure defense forced 18 turnovers and fast-paced offense produced assists on 24-of-35 field goals as the Spiders won their sixth straight and third in a row over the Colonials. UR shot 50.7 percent (35-of-69) despite missing 19-of-23 three-point attempts.
Brittani Shells, the A-10's leading scorer, paced UR with 16 points. Joyous Tharrington and Abby Oliver added 13 apiece off the bench and Katie Holzer netted 10.
UR led 16-8 early, but jump shots from Myers, Nipe and Janine Davis got GW within four at 16-12, forcing the hosts to call timeout at the 10:11 mark. The Spiders responded to the 30-second breather, rattling off nine unanswered during a 21-6 run to surge ahead 37-18 at the half.
Richmond's hot shooting continued after the break as it hit eight of its first 11 shots to begin the second half to extend its lead to 29 at 53-24 with 14:09 remaining.
GW would get no closer than 24 points, 55-31, on Sara Mostafa's three-point play with 10:22 left.
Janine Davis' triple with 2:38 to play extended the Colonials' streak of games with a made three pointer to 136. GW finished 1-of-8 from three-point range and 19-of-58 overall (32.8 percent).
The Colonials play their final non-conference game of the season Thursday at Villanova at 7:00 pm. GW's game against Mount St. Mary's, previously scheduled for Dec. 20, but postponed due to a blizzard, has been cancelled.
