GW Women's Soccer Drops Tournament Opener

BLACKSBURG, VA - The George Washington women's soccer team (1-3) opened the first leg of the Hawthorn Suites Invitational with a 2-0 loss to #17 Wake Forest on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA.
Wake Forest started off the scoring 23 minutes into the game with a goal on a low shot from Allie Sadow. Jill Hutchinson added another goal for the Demon Deacons with about 10 minutes left in the half off a cross that eluded several GW defenders.
Senior Meg Pyle had the best scoring chance of the half for the Colonials. Kerry Philbin put a long ball over the heads of the Wake Forest defenders and Pyle ran onto the ball a second too late as the Demon Deacon goalkeeper gathered the ball.
Both teams hunkered down in the second half with neither team allowing a goal. GW limited Wake Forest to two shots on net in the half and forced the Demon Deacons into committing three fouls and being offside twice.
"Wake is a great team and they executed well on their scoring opportunites. Still, our team took a step forward in areas we have focused on in training," said GW Head Coach Tanya Vogel. "This schedule was designed to prepare us for Atlantic 10 competition. Both Neel and I are happy with how we competed today. We look for a great battle again this Sunday."
GW will next take on host Virginia Tech Sunday at 1:30 pm. The next GW home game at Mount Vernon Field (2100 Foxhall Rd. NW) will be Friday, Sept. 12 at 4 p.m. against Delaware State.
