Blacksburg, VA - George Washington women's soccer (1-4) dropped the last leg of the Hawthorn Suites Invitational with a 2-0 loss to host Virginia Tech (3-2) in Blacksburg, VA.
The first half was a defensive struggle that saw both teams playing hard in their own end. GW and Virginia Tech combined for 15 fouls. Colonials Goalie Lindsey Rowe was bombarded with 10 shots with none of them finding the back of the net.
The best chance of the first half for the Colonials came with just under 10 minutes remaining. Junior Liz Hillin crossed the ball through the box to the feet of freshman Sierra Smidinger who shot the ball just over the net.
Virginia Tech opened up the scoring with 21 minutes remaining in the second half. There was a miscommunication between the Colonials defense and Rowe and Emily Jukich put the Hokies up 1-0. Minutes later the Hokies Marika Gray finished the scoring by making a move around a Colonials defender and blasting a shot into the top corner of the net putting Virginia Tech up 2-0.
The Colonials will return to Mount Vernon Field (2100 Foxhall Rd. NW) to play Delaware State on Friday, September 12 at 4 p.m. and Howard on Sunday, September 14 at 1 p.m.
