FARMVILLE, VA - Playing in Tropical Storm Hanna's steady rain, the George Washington men's soccer team surrendered a goal in the 77th minute and failed punch in an equalizer during a last-second rally in a 2-1 loss at Longwood Friday evening.
Longwood's Shane Johnson tallied the game-winning goal on a rebound in the 77th minute and the Lancers survived a four-shot flurry from the Colonials in the final 20 seconds, including an apparent goal not called by officials.
After falling behind 1-0 early on a goal by Chernor Diallo in the third minute, junior Andy Stadler (Wauwatosa, WI/Wauwatosa West) scored his team- and Atlantic 10-leading fourth goal of the season to bring GW even at 1-1 in the 14th minute. Stadler has scored in each of GW's three matches this season.
The teams were even in shots, 12-12, with the Colonials placing six shots on goal versus the Lancers three shots on target. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Matt Scheer (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) made one save, while counterpart Joel Helmick made five saves.
Longwood (2-1-0) exacted revenge on GW following a 2-1 loss in Washington, DC, last season, a match which saw the Colonials net both of their goals in the fifth minute. The Colonials are now 1-2-0 all-time against the Lancers, with all three meetings taking place the past three seasons.
GW (1-1-1), which entered Friday night's match ranked seventh in the NSCAA Middle Atlantic regional rankings, hosts Loyola (MD) in its lone non-conference match at Mount Vernon Field Saturday, Sept. 13, at 3:00 pm. The Colonials will hold Alumni Day festivities throughout the day Saturday.
