WASHINGTON, DC - Junior forward Andy Stadler scored two goals and had two assists to lead the George Washington men's soccer team to a 6-0 exhibition victory over Division II Shepherd at Mount Vernon Field Wednesday afternoon.
Playing its first competition of the season, the Colonials' men's soccer team took a 2-0 first-half cushion behind a pair of goals from sophomore Marcus Ranney. Ranney pounced on a rebound in front of the Shepherd net in the ninth minute, then had a low, driving cross directed into the goal by a Rams' defender in the 32nd minute.
GW took control in the second half, owning the majority of possession and outshooting Shepherd 17-2 in the period. Stadler tallied his first goal in the 52nd minute, beating two defenders just outside the 18-yard box before slotting the ball into the lower left corner.
Five minutes later, Stadler sent redshirt junior Mike Rollings loose in the offensive third and Rollings maneuvered around the Shepherd goalkeeper for the 4-0 lead.
Stadler got his second tally at the 66:00 mark when he settled a lofted pass from redshirt junior Luke Wildy and blasted a left-footed volley into the net.
Junior Erick Perez-Segnini rounded out the scoring in the 90th minute with a 15-yard volley to the upper right corner. Freshman Yoni Berhanu and Stadler were credited with assists on the play.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Matt Scheer made two saves during the first half, while redshirt freshman Erik Haug made one stop during the first 21 minutes of the second half. Redshirt sophomore Scott Goossens played the final 24 minutes in net and was not forced to make a save.
GW travels to Lynchburg, VA, for an exhibition match against Liberty this Saturday, before opening the season against George Mason in the DC College Cup at American University on Aug. 29.
