GW Names Wendy Lawrence Men's Squash Coach

WASHINGTON, DC - Wendy Lawrence has been named the new head coach for men's squash at The George Washington University, Senior Associate Director of Athletics Mary Jo Warner has announced. Lawrence, the program's third head coach, replaces former coach Jude Odeh.
Lawrence, a US Squash Racquets Association (USSRA) Certified Coach and Referee, has an extensive and impressive background in squash, both as a player and a coach. She began her career at the Uptown Racquet Club in New York, NY, where she served as the head squash professional from 1977-81. From there, she moved onto the Washington Sports Club, here in Washington, DC, where she was both the general manager and head squash professional for 17 years. For 14 of those seasons, 1981-95, Lawrence was the No. 1 ranked women's player in Washington, DC, and was ranked as high as No. 12 nationally in 1984.
Following her time at the Washington Sports Club, Lawrence moved onto the Capitol Hill Day School and acted as the athletic director for four years, overseeing all the school's sports teams, including soccer, basketball and softball. Directly prior to joining the squash team here at GW, she was the Boys and Girls Varsity Squash Coach at The Potomac School in McLean, VA. Under her guidance, the boys were the 2007 Mid-Atlantic Champions and the girls two-time Mid-Atlantic Champions (2001 and 2005). Additionally, Lawrence has served as the Director of Squash and the owner of Results Gym in Washington, DC, since 2001.
Lawrence has been presented the Wedgewood Trophy for her contributions to squash in the United States and the Feron Cup, an award for sportsmanship, both from the USSRA. In 2006, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Capitol Squash Racquets Association (NCSRA). In 2005, Lawrence founded the DC Squash Academy, a non-profit organization that woks with under-served DC Public School children to train in squash and provide academic tutoring and mentoring.
Lawrence earned her bachelor's degree in Political Science from Vassar College in 1974, where she was a member of both the squash and tennis teams
The Colonials squash teams play their home matches in the Lerner Health and Wellness Center, located at 2301 G Street NW in Washington, DC.
