MADISON, WI -- The George Washington Men's Rowing team continuedits young season with mixed results against the University of Minnesota and the second varsity from the University of Wisconsin in series of 2,000-meter races on Lake Mendota in Madison, WI. The Varsity 8 race was a dual race between Minnesota and GW. All racing was into slight headwind on a sunny day with temperatures around 60 degrees.
The varsity raced well and defeated a solid Minnesota crew, but couldn't match Wisconsin's power through the body of the race," GW Men's Head Coach Greg Myhr said. "The freshmen went up against one of the deepest Wisconsin freshman classes in memory. Minnesota put up an excellent fight, being vanquished by GW only in the final quarter of the race to finish fifth."
The three Wisconsin entries were separated by only 10 seconds, with GW finishing fourth behind all three boats. The Wisconsin boat had six seniors in it, all of whom were coached by Myhr as freshmen, when the current GW coach was an assistant coach at UW.
The Colonials' next competition will be this Saturday, April 22, when they host the Bucknell in a dual race on the Potomac River. Racing gets underway at 8:30 a.m. and admission is free. Spectator viewing areas are at Washington Harbour near Rock Creek Parkway and Virginia Ave., NW.
