WASHINGTON, DC -- The GW Women's Rowing team varsity eight defeated Georgetown Saturday on the Potomac River. The Colonials completed the 2,000-meter course in 6:34.1, more than three seconds ahead of Georgetown. The Hoyas, however, took home the Class of 1998 Cup, awarded to the team that accumulates the most points in the four classifications.
The GW novice eight and novice four both put in strong performances in finishing second in their respective races. The 2,000-meter race was run in good conditions with no wind, slight tail current and about a one-inch chop the last 750 meters.
The Class of 1998 Cup is awarded based on the following point system: V8 - 40 points, V4 - 20 points, N8 - 20 points and N4 - 10 points.
"I was pleased again this week with how the varsity eight raced," GW head coach Rob McCracken said. "Although they were not as composed as they have been in the past, they were able to row the entire race at a 36 rating. The other varsity boats were dealing with some last minute line-up changes and did not row as well as they are capable of rowing. We will try to get things back on track this week as we prepare for the A-10 Championship this weekend."
"I was disappointed in how we raced against the Georgetown novices," GW assistant coach Sarah Dondero said. "They were neck and neck for 1400 meters, but just weren't rowing efficiently enough to pull away when it mattered. Luckily, the boat is getting smarter and realizing what needs to be done to row better, and now we just have to make it happen. The fours race was fun and I was pleased with how they both raced on no rest at all."
The women next compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Rowing Championships on Saturday, April 22 at Cooper River Park in Pennsauken, NJ.
