
Three GW Rowers Earn A-10 Academic All-Conference

WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington rowers Kate Austin (Madison, WI), Liz Gordon (Phoenix, AZ) and Mary Kate Martelon (Milford, CT) were named to the 2005 Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Rowing Academic All-Conference Team Wednesday, the league office announced. The 11-member team was selected in a vote by the conference's Sports Information Directors. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average and be an important part of the team.
All three row in GW's Varsity 8 shell that won the grand final at the 2005 GW Invitational Crew Classic April 9 on the Potomac River. The Colonials' Varsity 8 also won silver at the 2005 Atlantic 10 championships April 23 in Camden, NJ.
Austin maintains a 3.75 GPA as a public health and Spanish major while Gordon has a 3.73 GPA while majoring in environmental studies. Martelon maintains a 3.36 GPA as a public health major.
Austin, a sophomore who rows in the 7 seat, was named the team's MVP as a freshman last year. Gordon, also a sophomore, rows in the 4 seat and has the team's second-fastest ergometer time for 2,000 meters this year. Martelon, a junior and one of the team's co-captains, rows from the stroke position and has been named the team's MVP for the 2004-05 season.
The GW women next race at the Eastern Sprints on Sunday, May 15 at Camden, NJ.
