Rowing Takes Detour To Mercer

MERCER, NJ -- The GW Men's and Women's Rowing teams both competed during the weekend, just not where they were originally scheduled. The women were scheduled to race at Princeton against Southern California, Virginia and the host Tigers, but severe traffic congestion resulting from a truck fire on Interstate 95 delayed the team by six hours forcing them to withdraw from the Princeton race and instead compete at Mercer, NJ, against Columbia, Navy and Rutgers.
The men were scheduled to host Georgetown in The Duel on the Potomac Sunday but the Hoyas withdrew from the race due to a scheduling conflict. The Colonials then also traveled to Mercer where they competed against the Hoyas and Yale.
The travel problems took its toll on both teams as they finished last in almost every heat with the exception of the men's varsity 8 which was edged by just half of a second by Yale (6:04.0 to GW's 6:04.65) and defeated Georgetown by 14 seconds. The women's varsity 4 also defeated Navy and Rutgers.
The men next compete at the ECAC Rowing Championships on Friday and Saturday, May 6-7 at Worcester, MA, while the women have a week to prepare for the Eastern Sprints on Sunday, May 15 at Camden, NJ.
