ANNAPOLIS, MD -- After only rowing once the week due to the flooding of the Potomac River, the GW Women's Rowing team moved the Playfair Cup races to the Severn River in Annapolis, MD, hoping to find some flat water and better racing conditions. The water started flat for the varsity races and built up to a large chop and headwind making the later races challenging.
The Colonials were edged in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four events by Boston University and Navy but did finish ahead of Georgetown convincingly in all three races.
"Missing practice this week showed," said GW assistant coach Sarah Dondero.
Varsity eight:
Boston Univ. 7:31.95
Navy 7:45.38
George Washington 7:47.0
Georgetown 7:50.16
Second varsity eight:
Boston Univ. 8:33.34
Navy 8:39.33
George Washington 9:09.54
Georgetown 9:50.09
Varsity four:
Boston Univ. 9:35.45
Navy 9:57.35
George Washington 10:27.37
Georgetown 10:34.95
GW's first novice eight had a good race considering worsening conditions. The Colonials, despite having rowed in their line-up once, made a good charge at the end but came up short.
The Colonials will be at home Saturday, April 9, for the 18th Annual GW Invitational Crew Classic on the Potomac River to race for one of the coveted GW Invitational trophies. Racing begins at 9:00 a.m. and concludes at 4:00 p.m. with the varsity eights. The best viewing is from Washington Harbour at 3000 K Street, NW. Admission is free.
