WOODBRIDGE, VA -- The GW women's varsity eight and varsity four each won its championship Sunday at the Head of the Occoquan on the Occoquan Reservior. The GW women each entered two varsity eights and two varsity fours in the Women's Open Four. The GW A boat won the event while the B boat placed seventh of nine entries in the race. The Colonials' women's four A boat also won it's race out of 24 entries.
Racing conditions were nearly ideal with flat water and temperatures in the 70s although the crews did have to deal with occasional gusting winds. The Colonials skillfully navigated the winding 5,000-meter course and were able to overtake their competition at the turn.
"We accomplished what we set out to do, which was win," GW Women's Varsity Coach Rob McCracken said. "The fact that our Four rowed well was nice since they had only practiced together once or twice. We rowed strong through the wind and I'm pleased that we ended our Fall season on a good note."
"I am really proud of how they handledtheir first race," GW Novice Coach Sarah Dondero said. "For the rating and course they rowed, they had a strong race and a lot of fun.We got the experience we needed. We finished about where we expected and are now fired up to find more speed to finish the fall season at Princeton this weekend."
The two GW Women's Eight entries consist of: GW A - Sara Neugroschel, Mary Kate Martelon, Ashley McCawley, Diane Holcomb, Angela Costales, Christine Hamann, Courtney Fawcett and Angela Wunderli. GW B - Gina Fernandes, Elizabeth Cavanaugh, Laura Crotty, Ashley Larrimore, Anna Elazan, Emily Esman, Signe Hawley, Sarah Gall and Jessica Grivalsky.
The GW Women's Four entry consisted of: Mansi Shah, Kate Austin, Elizabeth Gordon, Hilary Goldberg and Jenna Feistritzer.
Next up for the GW freshmen women will be Belly of the Carnegie on Sunday, Nov. 13 at Princeton, NJ. The varsity women will work indoors until resuming their schedule in March when they compete at Rutgers against the Scarlet Knights and Rhode Island on Mar. 25.
