COLLINGSWOOD, NJ -- The GW women's rowing team placed fourth at the ninth Atlantic 10 Women's Rowing Championship Saturday afternoon on the Cooper River in Collingswood, NJ. The University of Massachusetts won its ninth straight title with 42 points. GW totaled 23 points, one point behind third place Saint Joseph's with 24.
GW's varsity Eight placed second, 7.7 seconds behind the Minutewomen. Both GW Novice Eights won their respective grand finals. In the Novice 8-B Grand Final, GW defeated second-place Dayton by a whopping 17 seconds and in the Novice 8-A Grand Final, GW won by five seconds over UMass.
The Minutewomen won three of eight races in posting 42 total points. Rhode Island placed second with 33 points. The second place finish is the third in a row for the Rams at the Atlantic 10 Championship. Saint Joseph's was third with 24 points and George Washington finished fourth with 23 points. The Colonials were followed by Dayton (20 points), Fordham (14 points), Temple (13 points), and Duquesne and La Salle (nine points).
UMass won gold in the Quad (7:33.2), Varsity 4 (8:15.7), and Varsity 8 (6:43.0) en route to the team title. George Washington won two events - Novice 8-A (7:09.6), Novice 8-B (7:34.5) - as did Rhode Island - Lightweight 8 (7:05.3) and Second Varsity 8 (7:01.0). La Salle won the Novice 4 (8:41.2).
No meet records were eclipsed.
For the sixth time in eight years, Massachusetts' Jim Deitz was named Coach of the Year in voting conducted among the Conference's head coaches. Deitz was previously honored in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2003.
