PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The GW men's and women's crews traveled to Philadelphia, Oct. 30 for the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta. The men's team sent two varsity eights to compete in the Championship Eight event, and the women sent three eights (two varsity and one novice) to race the three-mile course.
The GW men entered an A boat and a B boat that placed 17th and 18th, respectively, in the men's championship eight event. The race was won by a crew from the New York Athletic Club in a time of 12:33. There were 26 entries overall.
GW men's coach Matt Boyle felt the result was a strong indicator of the overall depth of the program. "We wanted to field two even entries and we succeeded in doing that, their times were only 10 seconds apart," Boyle said. "I feel like both crews have a lot of room to improve and that is what we will focus on in the coming weeks."
The GW women's varsity B boat placed 10th (15:30.02) and the A boat finished 13th (15:38.28) among 21 entries.
On the women's side, GW coach Helen Betancourt was pleased with her crews' effort. "The race went well for all three boats. The freshmen eight had a terrific finish placing fourth out of 50 eights. They were competitive with several of the top schools. The varsity raced in even boats and finished in the middle of the pack of boats."
The women's race was won by the University of Pennsylvania in a time of 14:30.95.
Both GW rowing teams will be in Princeton, NJ, for their next races on Sunday, Nov. 7. The GW men will compete in the Belly of the Carnegie while the women take part in the Princeton Chase, both at Princeton, NJ.
