PHILADELPHIA, PA - The GW men's and women's crews traveled to Philadelphia, Oct. 25 for the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta. The men's team sent a Varsity Four and a Varsity Eight to compete in the Championship Eight event, and the women sent three eights (two varsity and one novice) to race the three-mile course.

Men's Championship Eight (out of 17 college crews):

The GW men's Novice Four won its 13-team event with a time of 14:30.87 edging the Temple boat by less than a second.
The Colonials Varsity Eight, consisting of Evan Johnson(coxswain), Victor Marwin(8), Steve Carlson(7), Joe Richards(6), Alex Cashman(5), Justin Luther(4), Anthony Cipriano(3), James Thomas(2), Matt Gefter(1), placed seventh of 17 college entries. The Colonials were nosed out by less than a second by the Penn entry.
"I was not pleased with the result but it was a performance that we will try to build on for our Spring racing," GW men's coach Matt Boyle said regarding his squad's performance. "This crew has yet to put together a complete race but we will certainly keep working towards that goal."
The GW women's varsity eight, made up of Jessica Grivalsky(coxswain), Christine Hamann(8), Kristin Salman(7), Brynn Kowalski(6), Regina Cambrilargiu(5), Meg Schultz(4), Mary Kate Martelon(3), Boujke DeBoer(2) and Lisa Lockwood(1), placed fourth out 18 entries.
Women's Championship Eight (out of 18 crews):
1. U.S. Naval Academy 13:49
2. West Virginia 13:50
3. Fordham 13:56
4. George Washington 13:57
The Colonials novice eight, consisting of Annie Weisberg(coxswain), Elizabeth Gordon(8), Andrea Comer(7), Brandi Kerrigan(6), Tatiana Dea(5), Lindsay Cureton(4), Hilary Goldberg(3), Jennifer Cooperman(2), Jenna Feistritzer(1), team finished eighth out of 42 entries and showed great potential.
"The varsity eight had a strong race and closed the gap on crews that beat them by large margins last weekend," GW women's head coach Helen Betancourt said. "I am excited about the team's perfomance, it certainly is a step in the right direction."
Next up for the Colonials will be Head of the Occoquan on Saturday, Nov. 1 in Occoquan, VA.
