BOSTON, MA - The GW men's and women's crews began their Fall racing seasons this past weekend in Boston for the 39th running of the Head of the Charles Regatta. The race covers three miles as the Charles River winds through the heart of Boston. Thousands of competitors travel from all over the globe to compete for the title of "Head of the Charles" in one of the 43 events. Tens of thousands of spectators lined the shores for the full three miles making the Head of the Charles the largest single-day rowing event in the world.
The GW Varsity Men consisted of coxswain Evan Johnson, stroke Victor Marwin, 7-Steve Carlson, 6-Joe Richards, 5-Alex Cashman, 4-Justin Luther, 3-James Thomas, 2-Matt Gefter and bow Drew Mackintosh.
Racing in the Men's Championship Eight event the Colonials finished the three-mile course in a time of 15:32 to finish 36th out of 41 crews entered. A U.S. National team crew from the Princeton Training Center won the race in a time of 14:03.
"It was not the strongest performance this crew is capable of," GW head coach Matt Boyle said. "I have four seniors in that boat and I expect big things from them this year. However, we have spent very little time in the 8 this Fall so it is encouraging to think how much faster we can go if we improve on a few basic aspects of our rowing. Our race this weekend in Philadelphia should be a much better indicator as to what this crew is made of."
The GW women placed 37th of 40 entries in the Women's Championship Eight. The women finished in 18:04. The London Training Center crew won the race in the time of 15:31
