WASHINGTON, DC -The Colonials were unable to overcome an early 4-0 by the visiting La Salle Explorers, as GW lost their fourth-straight game, despite a four-goal game from freshman Heidi Mayer.
George Washington (4-11, 0-7) fell behind early in the game, as the Explorers scored four unanswered goals in the first five minutes of play. La Salle's Jamie Wilus, who entered the game leading the conference in points, continued to add to her total, netting two of her six goal on the day within the first two minutes.
The Colonials would respond after a timeout, turning to freshman Heidi Mayer (Havertown, PA/Haverford). Mayer scored two-straight goals of her own to halve LU's lead, 4-2. The Explorers would add another score before GW's Meghan McDonough (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) netted her 18th goal of the season with 17:24 remaining in the half.
La Salle's Wilus would extend the Explorers' lead to 6-3 six minutes later, but Mayer scored her second goal of the day to pull GW back with two. After another goal by the Explorers gave them a 7-4 advantage with 6:31 remaining in the half, Mayer and junior Jacqueline Arfaa (Bel Air, MD/John Caroll) netted two unanswered scores to get GW within one goal with 1:10 on the clock, 7-6. However, LU would get on the board once more before halftime, taking an 8-6 lead into the break.
LU started the second half much like they began the first, capitalizing early with two scores in the first six minutes to press their advantage to 10-6. This time however, the Colonials were unable to respond with the same tenacity they showed in the first half, as they out-shot the Explorers in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net, falling 14-9.
The loss to LU kept GW winless in the Atlantic 10 this season, as the Colonials fell to 0-7 in conference play. GW returns to action in their season finale at George Mason on Tuesday, April 30, in a 4:00 p.m. game.
