Men's Soccer Rolls Versus Xavier, 5-1
10/13/2002 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
WASHINGTON, DC - Senior captain Matt Osborne (Bingham, Notts, England/Toothill Comprehensive) scored three goals, including the game-winner, and junior Arnar Johannsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/C.C. of Iceland) added two scores of his own as the Colonials enjoyed an offensive explosion, topping Xavier 5-1, at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
GW (6-6-0, 2-2) got on the board first, when Johannsson intercepted a pass from a defender at the top of XU's (5-7-0, 0-3) box, broke free and blasted a shot past Mustketeers' keeper Brian Schaeper to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead at the 11:04 mark.
XU tied the match at one apiece when the Musketeers' Nick Thompson placed a cross through the mouth of GW's goal which ricocheted off a Colonials' defender and into the back of the net for an own goal at 17:24.
Osborne scored what would turn out to be the game-winner 13 minutes later, when freshman Steve Brown (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) made a perfect pass to him in the box, which Osborne placed in the lower right corner to give GW a 2-1 lead.
Osborne's first goal was all that the Colonials would need, as GW's defense would hold XU to a single second half shot. GW's offense also performed well, scoring three goals in the second half.
Johannsson notched his second score of the game off a penalty kick that was awarded to GW after Osborne was taken down from behind in the box on a breakaway. Osborne added two more scores in the contest off a pass from junior defender Jason Popik (Syosset, NY/Syosset) that Osborne brought across the top of the box and fired into the top right corner for his second goal of the day.
Senior midfielder Riccardo Forno (Toronto, Ontario/James Cardinal McGuigan) assisted on Osborne's third goal of the match, a breakaway behind the defense.
The Colonials host Saint Joseph's in their next match on Friday, Oct. 18, in a 3:00 p.m. match at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
