Colonials Lose Water Polo Season Opener In Last-Second Thriller
2/12/2001 12:00:00 AM | Water Polo
The Colonials (0-1, 0-1) controlled the early action, racing out to an early 6-2 lead behind solid play by freshman Mia Fabian who scored three goals in the first quarter and junior co-captain Heather Walenga who netted two by the second quarter.
The Bison pressed their attack in the third quarter, scoring three unanswered goals. GW had difficulty adjusting to Bucknell's new defensive scheme and was unable to find the same offensive production they had early in the match. With the score tied in the final quarter, the Colonials were able to take the lead on another Walenga goal. However, the Bison responded with two goals to take the match 8-7.
GW next travels to Villanova University to take part in the Villanova Invitational on February 17th. The Colonials will play three matches over the course of the day, facing Villanova at 10:15 am, Princeton at 2:15 pm and will have a rematch against Bucknell at 4:45 pm.
