Women's Soccer Defeats VCU, 2-1 Caramanica and Cracker Score As Colonials Prepare for Key Weekend
RICHMOND, VA (Oct. 2). - Senior co-captain Angelica Caramanica (Huntington, NY/Huntington) scored her first goal of the season to break a 1-1 tie and give the Colonials a 2-1 victory over the Virginia Commonwealth Rams, this evening, Oct. 2, in Richmond, VA. With the victory GW improves to 3-4 on the season.
GW jumped out to the early lead when freshman Meghan Cracker (Lake Oswego, OR/Lakeridge) brought down Kelly Lawten's (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) cross just outside the Rams' penalty area and beat VCU goalkeeper Chrissy Lloyd to her right just 2:22 into the match.
The Rams battled back to tie the game on a goal by sophomore forward Shayla Clark in the 13th minute. Clark collected a pass from freshman midfielder Eve Briere, dribbled past her defender on the right side and scored from six yards out for her fourth goal of the year.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Colonials took the lead on Caramanica's unassisted goal. Caramanica won a loose ball near the Rams' penalty spot and scored from 14 yards out for the eventual game-winner. The Rams pressed for the equalizer, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Lloyd and GW goalkeeper Christine O'Malley (Davis, CA/Davis Senior) each recorded five saves in goal.
The Colonials return to action with a pair of key Atlantic 10 battles this weekend at the GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. On Friday, Oct. 5, GW will face Xavier beginning at 4:00 p.m. Then the Colonials will host the Dayton Flyers on Sunday, Oct. 7, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
