George Washington University Exercise Science professor Dr. Kyle Levers will serve as the university's next NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR).
The FAR represents the institution and its faculty in relationships with the NCAA and the Atlantic 10 Conference. Internally, Dr. Levers will serve as a liaison on academic affairs between the Department of Athletics and the Office of the President and the Faculty Senate. He will also play a pivotal role in promoting academic integrity and supporting institutional control of intercollegiate athletics, while facilitating interaction between athletics and academics to enhance the student-athlete experience.
"As our FAR, my goal will be to build upon the foundation laid by previous faculty serving in this role, strengthen the connection between university faculty, student-athletes, and athletics staff to open more lines of communication and increase continuity in the ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics," said Dr. Levers. "I look forward to collaborating with the athletics department to further the holistic development of our student-athletes."
With a passion for human performance at the intersection of health and exercise, Dr. Levers is a former multi-sport youth athlete who fondly remembers training in the gym with his father. A wrestler, elite club and high school soccer player, he was a member of a nationally-ranked New Jersey state championship soccer team his junior year. A scholarship recipient at McDaniel College, where he competed in soccer and returned to track and field as a sprinter and javelin thrower, Dr. Levers continues to play soccer semi-competitively while exploring new physical challenges like rock climbing, stand-up paddleboarding, classical pilates and weightlifting.
After earning his bachelor's degree in Exercise Science and Chemistry at McDaniel, an MS in Exercise Physiology/Strength & Conditioning at GW and his PhD in Exercise Physiology from Texas A&M University, Dr. Levers is now an Assistant Professor in the Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences in the Milken Institute School of Public Health. His recent research interests have been focused on the application of movement, health and nutrition-based interventions as methods to enhance health and human performance. He has published several articles and co-authored two book chapters related to the influences of nutrition and supplementation on exercise performance and body composition. A presenter at several regional, national, and international events on topics ranging from health and physical activity, weight management, sports nutrition, youth sport specialization, athletic development and performance evaluation, his expertise led to the founding of a start-up wearable technology company in 2013 to improve blood pressure monitoring accuracy and reliability during exercise.
"Dr. Levers shares our commitment to the well-rounded, holistic development, growth and success of our student-athletes here in the nation's capital," said Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Lipitz. "He has shown throughout his distinguished career in academia that athletics can hold a unique role in the development of people, while also understanding the power of sport as a platform to elevate an entire enterprise."
The 2022 student-athlete's choice for Professor of the Year, Dr. Levers sits on the university's Senate Committee on Athletics and Recreation as well as the committee on Physical Facilities and Campus Safety. A certified professional of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and lead reviewer for the Council on Accreditation of Strength and Conditioning Education, prior to his career in academia Dr. Levers worked as a strength and conditioning coach with collegiate teams at both GW and Texas A&M. As part of his coaching tenure, he worked individually with several NFL, NBA, NBL and EuroLeague professional athletes, and served as a strength and conditioning coach for the Philadelphia Soul Arena Football team during their 2008 and 2016 ArenaBowl Championship seasons.  After obtaining his doctoral degree at Texas A&M, Dr. Levers founded a strength and conditioning facility in New Jersey where he served as the Director of Athletic Performance and Nutrition before returning to higher education in 2017. Â
