GW Athletics is introducing a revised Athletics Hall of Fame process in which candidates will be considered following an open nomination process and announcing a new tradition in which former student-athletes and coaches will be considered to have their jersey honored or retired.
ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
GW will induct the next class to its prestigious Athletics Hall of Fame on Friday, December 5th, 2025. Nominations will be accepted through April 28, 2025, through a standard Hall of Fame Nomination Form on GWsports.com.
Founded in 1959, seven inaugural members, including basketball icon Red Auerbach, began this tradition of excellence, which has seen the Hall of Fame grow to 189 members and four historic teams. Any student-athlete, coach, administrator, or special contributor is eligible for consideration. Former student-athlete nominees are eligible if they completed their athletic eligibility five or more years ago and they earned a GW degree or left the institution in good academic standing.
HONORING JERSEYS
GW Athletics is proud to introduce a new tradition in which individuals can be recognized as all-time greats by honoring or retiring their jerseys in its athletics venues.
The Revolutionaries new Retired & Honored Jersey Policy formalizes a process to receive this special honor for student-athletes and coaches who have achieved extraordinary athletic accomplishments during their careers at George Washington. Jerseys may be retired or honored, with the latter recognition enabling the number to remain in circulation. To date, only softball's Elana Meyers Taylor, the most decorated Black athlete in Winter Olympics history, has had her jersey retired.
As with the GW Athletics Hall of Fame, nominations for honored and retired jerseys shall be accepted through a standard form available on GWsports.com.
