Northbrook, Ill. – GW student-athletes Rachel Katz (gymnastics) and Darren Buchanan Jr. (men's basketball) have been listed on the Allstate and NACDA Good Works Team for the winter 2025 season. The list, featuring 193 student-athletes from around the country, honors those excelling in sports, in the classroom and in the community. Nominated by their athletics administrators, conference office staff and coaches, these student-athletes embody leadership, service and character and will now be considered for selection to the inaugural Allstate NACDA Good Works Team. Katz, a native of Charlotte, N.C., spent her summer as a Pediatric Therapy Student Volunteer in her hometown. Katz aided hemiplegic and neurodivergent children, aged 4 - 12, through fine motor activities, eating behaviors, camp activities and PT/OT sessions as a one-on-one assistant. As a leader on the gymnastics team, she has overseen numerous volunteer activities with the Washington D.C. community in events such as the St. Jude Walk for children's cancer awareness, Walk to End Alzheimer's, cards for hospitalized children and the Susan G. Komen 'More than Pink Walk' for breast cancer awareness. As the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's Mental Health & Advocacy Chair, Katz organized GW's campus-wide bone marrow registry drive with the National Marrow Donor Program, registering approximately 100 potential donors and promoting the cause across campus. Katz has also participated in multiple annual service trips with Matthews Presbyterian Church, working in one of the most impoverished U.S. counties to paint homes and churches, assist with repairs as necessary and engage with community members and their children about their experiences.
