Revolutionaries Roll Past Highlanders, Claiming First Victory of 2024

WASHINGTON - GW volleyball began the season with a successful, 3-0, victory over UC Riverside Friday night, defeating the Highlanders 25-22, 25-21, 25-18.
BY THE NUMBERS
Veteran MC Daubendiek led the charge for the Buff & Blue, registering 13 kills on the night. First-year Taylor Treahy followed closely behind, tallying nine kills and three blocks in her collegiate debut. Senior Salem Yohannes put down eight kills to help the offense, which clocked 58 points on Friday night. Dilara Elmacıoğlu and Abby Markworth contributed 23 and 15 assists, respectively, as the primary setters for the GW Revs. Starting at Libero, graduate student Reilly Heinrich tallied 14 digs, while Cianna Tejada and Kelsey Watkins were dominant at the net, leading the charge in the team's eight-block effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set one featured 14 total kills as the Revolutionaries took an early lead over the Highlanders. The lead remained narrow but kills from Cianna Tejada and Haylee Brown late in the set forced the 25-22 victory in the opening stanza.
In the second set, Taylor Treahy opened with a service ace for the Buff & Blue. The lead continued to widen with kills from Treahy and MC Daubendiek early on. Continued progress at the net followed as Haylee Brown and Kelsey Watkins contributed to the widening lead over the Highlanders. The set ended with a kill from MC Daubendiek off an assist from Elmacıoğlu to cement the 2-0 lead.
In the final set of the night, Treahy was dominant in the front row, contributing a block and a kill within the first five points. For the remainder of the set, kills from Tejada, Brown, Daubendiek, Yohannes and Watkins pushed the Revolutionaries to a 25-18 victory in the third set to earn their first win of the 2024 campaign.

The Buff & Blue will continue their weekend of play as they face Howard on Saturday with a 1 p.m. first serve in the Charles E. Smith Center.
