ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The George Washington University water polo team (15-8, 11-3 MAWPC) closed out the regular season this weekend, beating Johns Hopkins, 11-7, on Friday night before falling to Navy by an identical final score on Saturday morning. The Revolutionaries will now await final seeding for the upcoming MAWPC Championship.
No. 20 (T) GW 11, Johns Hopkins 7
Looking for the season sweep of Johns Hopkins, the Revolutionaries went to battle against the Blue Jays on Friday night at Long Bridge Park. After a low-scoring first quarter in which GW led just 1-0, the Buff & Blue offense got rolling and went up 5-0 via three goals from Adonis Vlassis and one from Yam Kabakov. The Jays closed the gap and found themselves down just one goal, 6-5, early in the third, but that's as close as they'd be in the match as the Buff & Blue pulled away in the second half for its 11-7 victory.
Vlassis powered the offense the whole night, scoring six and matching his second-highest scoring output of the season. Kabakov and Andrija Sekulic each added two goals, while Luca Castorina made nine saves in net and dished out one assist.Â
No. 20 (T) GW 7, No. 20 (T) Navy 11
The Revolutionaries and Midshipmen went head-to-head for the second time in two weeks after GW escaped the Mids, 13-12, on Oct. 25 at Long Bridge Park. Now playing in Navy's home pool, the Mids had the advantage and outlasted the Revolutionaries to split the regular-season series. The teams were tied at 3-3 after one quarter, but after the first is when Navy began to pull away, leading 6-3 at half and 9-5 after three quarters. The Midshipmen wouldn't be denied on Saturday as they cruised to a comfortable 11-7 victory.
Vlassis once again paced GW on offense, scoring four of GW's seven goals.
