Volleyball Sweeps Rhode Island For First A-10 Victory

WASHINGTON – GW volleyball picked up its first Atlantic 10 win of the season on Saturday in a 3-0 sweep of Rhode Island, 25-15, 25-21, 37-35.
BY THE NUMBERS
Liv Womble paced the GW offense with a season-high 15 kills and two errors on 27 attempts to finish with a .481%. MC Daubendiek added eight kills with one error on 12 attempts to hit .583. As a team, GW put down 37 kills, equaling its season high in a three-set match. Maeve Loughran tallied 19 assists and Dilara Elmacioglu added eight.
Defensively, Amina Robinson scooped up 13 digs and Sydney Stewart made four blocks at the net.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In set one, GW and Rhode Island each tallied seven kills, but GW's offense was significantly more efficient, hitting .278 to Rhode Island's -.038. Powered by a five-point scoring run in the early stages of the match, GW held a 10-6 lead. GW went on another rally, stretching its lead to 17-10, and closed the set with four kills to help to the 25-15 victory.
GW put down 12 kills to Rhode Island's two in the second set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The two teams went the distance in the final set, with a back and fourth set, which included ties at every point after the 24th until GW eventually won the set 37-35. Womble had four timely kills in the stretch, with GW's offense being more efficient again, out-hitting URI .226 to .161, with both teams putting down a match-high 18 kills.
