WASHINGTON – GW volleyball will head to the University of Virginia this weekend for the Jefferson Cup Invitational for its final non-conference weekend of the season. The Buff & Blue will play Wofford on Friday at 4:30 p.m. before playing either the host Cavaliers or Norfolk State on Saturday with a time to be determined.Â
LAST TIME OUTÂ
The Revolutionaries dropped a 3-0 decision at NC State on Wednesday night. Liv Womble paced the GW offense with eight kills and MC Daubendiek added seven kills behind a season-best .500 hitting percentage.Â
BLOCK PARTY
Sydney Stewart and Kelsey Watkins have proven to be quite the duo as middle blockers for the Revolutionaries. Both Watkins and Stewart have tallied 29 blocks this season, owning the third and fourth spot, respectively, in the Atlantic 10. Stewart recorded a career-best seven blocks vs. Georgetown last Saturday and Watkins has made 14 stops at the net since GW's matchup with North Alabama. Aside from her career-best, Stewart has been a problem at the net for opposing teams, tallying six blocks in both matches last Friday and a pair in Wednesday's loss at NC State.Â
ACROSS THE NET
Wofford is 7-2 overall and is riding a three-match win streak heading into Friday's matchup. Sarah Barham was named the SoCon's Defensive Player of the Week after tallying 26 blocks and 44 kills in four matches. Barham leads the Terriers with 75 kills this season. Wofford is first in the conference with 85 blocks, also led by Barham, who leads the league with 38, averaging 1.19/set. Â
Virginia is 6-2 overall and is led offensively by Abby Tadder with 106 kills, averaging 3.31 k/s, good enough for fifth in the ACC. Virginia is fourth in the conference with 79 blocks on the year, led by Veresia Yon and Tadder with 36 and 35, respectively.Â
Norfolk State sits at 1-4, with first-year outside hitter Gabrielle Gilbert entering the weekend as the MEAC's reigning Rookie of the Week. Gilbert totaled 44 kills last weekend, including a career-high 22 in the Spartans' five-set victory over UNCW. Gilbert leads the team with 58 kills, followed closely by Shonte Seale (56) and Alexa Harris (55).Â
