WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's soccer team announced its 2023 regular season schedule on Friday. The 18-match regular season slate includes nine home contests, all of which will be played at the Mount Vernon Athletics Complex, as well as nine matches on the road. The schedule features eight non-conference contests along with ten Atlantic 10 matchups.
"I'm excited for the season to begin in a few short weeks," head coach Michelle Demko said. "We have nine opportunities to play at home in front of our GW campus community, so we hope to see a good turnout at The Vern this fall. Looking at the schedule, we will call on our leadership and togetherness early as we hit the road for two tough games against Bucknell and UNC Greensboro in non-conference play. Both games offer great opportunities to be battle tested in important areas that are critical for success. Moments of transition, the ability to absorb pressure, communication, and mental focus for 90 minutes while dealing with elements of being on the road, will give us full benefit for the season ahead. We also continue local rivalries with quality opponents that will help us prepare and build toward challenging road games in conference play such as UMass and Loyola Chicago, as well as at home against La Salle and Saint Joseph's. I'm looking forward to getting started with this group. They are invested in their growth and development."
Prior to the regular season, GW will take to the pitch for two exhibition matches. The Revolutionaries will first travel to Richmond on Saturday, Aug. 5 for a 5:30 p.m. contest, then wrap up their exhibition calendar with an 11 a.m. home matchup with Lafayette on Thursday, Aug. 10.
GW kicks off the regular season on Thursday, Aug. 17 when it hosts Delaware State at 3 p.m. Last season, GW defeated the Hornets 3-0, using three second-half goals to cruise to victory. The Buff and Blue are a perfect 8-0 against the Hornets all-time, dating back to their first matchup in 2008. Following the battle with Delaware State, GW will hit the road for two non-conference contests. The Buff and Blue will first travel to Lewisburg, Pa. to face Bucknell on Sunday, Aug. 20 at 1 p.m., then return to the road on Sunday, Aug. 27 with a 5 p.m. battle against UNC Greensboro.
The Buff and Blue will return home on Thursday, Aug. 31 when Youngstown State travels to The Vern. The contest will mark the first time the two programs square off against each other and is scheduled for a 3 p.m. kickoff. GW's remaining non-conference schedule includes a road contest against UMBC (Sept. 3, 4 p.m.), a home matchup with Howard (Sept. 7, 3 p.m.), a home bout against American (Sept. 10, 1 p.m.), and a road match versus NJIT (Oct. 4, 6 p.m.).
GW opens A-10 play on Thursday, Sept. 14 when they travel to take on Massachusetts at 4 p.m. The Buff and Blue have had recent success against UMass, winning four of their last five meetings against the Minutewomen. The Revolutionaries will also travel to A-10 foes Loyola Chicago (Sept. 24, 1 p.m.), Duquesne (Oct. 12, 7 p.m.), George Mason (Oct. 15, 5 p.m.), and St. Bonaventure (Oct. 22, 1 p.m.). The Buff and Blue's home A-10 slate includes matchups with Fordham (Sept. 17, 1 p.m.), La Salle (Sept. 21, 3 p.m.), Saint Joseph's (Sept. 28, 3 p.m.), Dayton (Oct. 1, 1 p.m.), and a Senior Day match against Davidson (Oct. 19, 3 p.m.).
The 2023 Atlantic 10 Championship will be played between Friday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Nov. 5. GW last competed in the A-10 Championship in 2019 when it advanced to the title match. All A-10 Championship matches will be played on the campuses of the matches' higher seed.
